Android has the Google brand attached to it, which is a major boon, but attention spans are short in this market.

Marketers should understand that the mobile space is an organism like an iPhone or Nexus, but a volatile ecosystem, and should cover their bases across all platforms.

Let's take another up-and-comer: Palm. Palm's webOS devices (Pre and Pixi) have gotten very high marks in reviews, and are both generally considered best-in-class smartphones. The Pre was one of the most tweeted subjects of 2009, which cannot be said of Android or any of the handsets it runs on.

Enhanced versions of those devices, the "Pre Plus" and "Pixi Plus" land on Verizon this month and AT&T in Spring, so Google has plenty of competition this year on all major carriers.

There is no such thing as an iPhone killer, or even a Blackberry killer, not right now and not soon. However, the fight for 3rd place is far from decided.
