At a Wednesday press event, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg announced three product updates that will significantly influence user experience within the platform. First, Facebook will begin rolling out a landmark ‘Download Your Information’ feature which, in essence, enables users to access and retrieve the lifespan of their content within the platform via a ZIP file download. This information will be pulled from Facebook’s API, so deleted content will not be available — yet, this feature is a noteworthy shift from the “black box” reputation that Facebook seems to have regarding user data. A second new feature is the Applications You Use Dashboard, which eases user management of applications within the platform.
The third update – and most significant for marketers – is the new Facebook Groups, which expands the concept of Facebook Lists (a prior feature that lets users create sub-groups) to encourage users to establish and join sub-communities within which they can share content (e.g. documents, photos, links) and even communicate within private Group Chats.
