This week brought a U.S. Masters win for Bubba Watson (and for Waffle House), the announcement of a new Doritos Locos Tacos Flavor via SnapChat and a significant mobile update from Facebook. Keep reading for these and more headlines.
Facebook Introduces Optional “Nearby Friends” Setting
Facebook just announced a new feature called “Nearby Friends”. The optional setting, if turned on, will periodically notify a user of friends that are nearby or on the go, facilitating in-person interactions. Similarly, friends of a user may see that user’s location if the user chooses to share it with them. Facebook maintains that the new feature will not be used for ad targeting “for now,” though this will be something for advertisers to watch in the future.
Waffle House Wins Big
The U.S. Masters concluded Sunday with a big win for Bubba Watson, his second tournament win in the last three years. Moments after his victory, Waffle House tweeted at the champion congratulating him and stating that there was a grilled cheese waiting for him. Later that night, Watson took them up on the offer and tweeted out an image of himself eating at one of their locations. His tweet received more than 16,000 retweets and over 20,000 favorites. ESPN called the visit an “unexpected plug” and a Waffle House spokesman said the golf champ has been a fan of the restaurant for years.
We got your grilled cheese waiting on you @bubbawatson! Way to go!!!

HBO Builds Digital Throne with #TakeTheThrone Effort
HBO’s “Game of Thrones” Season 4 premiere marked the most social HBO original series debut ever. Since the premiere, HBO (a 360i client) has been promoting the hashtag #TakeTheThrone as part of a larger integrated effort to continue building fan excitement around the show. HBO is challenging fans to take the most desired seat in Westeros (The Throne) by staking a claim to it on Twitter, Facebook and/or Instagram using the hashtag #TakeTheThrone. In doing so, fans can enter for the chance to win a trip to San Diego to sit on the real Iron Throne at Comic-Con. HBO is using the #TakeTheThrone posts to create a completely fan-built, digital 3D throne made solely out of the letters of words from fan’s social claims.
